By Kathie Fiveash

Winner of the 2015 Maine Literary Award – John N. Cole Award for Maine – themed nonfiction. Island Naturalist was chosen by the Cole family for this award from 17 entries.

Naturalist Kathie Fiveash lives on sparsely populated Isle au Haut, six miles off the Downeast Maine coast and writes a column called “Island Naturalist” for Island Ad-Vantages, the local weekly newspaper. Season by season, explore with her the flora and fauna of the rocky shores, spruce forests, bogs, meadows, clam flats, ponds, streams, marshes and ocean of coastal Maine.

Kathie writes: “This book is one of the fruits of a lifetime of interest in the natural world….Writing about nature is one way for me to encourage environmental awareness and maybe even activism….I hope the book will be a reference that will help you to explore your own connections to this wild, beautiful, and unique place that is the coast of Maine."
